Changing of zooplankton characteristics in the Curonian Lagoon during «hyperblooming» of blue-green algae

Summary:
The Curonian Lagoon is a hypereutrophic water reservoir exposed to extreme anthropogenic pressure; periodically in the water area of the Lagoon the «hyperblooming» is detected featuring massive growth of potentially toxic blue-green algae. Various characteristics of zooplankton (the fraction of dead organisms, anomalies on the species and population levels) were studied during the year when «hyperblooming» is not mentioned, and in the year when «hyperblooming» phenomenon was observed. It was shown that the massive development of blue-green algae affected negatively the ecological status of zooplankton in the Curonian Lagoon. During «hyperblooming» season in July-September there was observed an increase of dead organisms in zooplankton and various pathologies on the species and population level indicating the adverse state of the Curonian Lagoon ecosystem during this period. These indicators manifest the status of the water reservoir, they and be successfully used to evaluate its ecological status and to study the impact of mass development of blue-green algae on zooplankton.
