Accumulation of metals by Equisetum l. plants (Equisetopsida: Equisetaceae michx. ex dc.) from ecologically unharmed sections of the upper reaches of the Pechora River

The research deals with chemical composition of horsetail (Equisetum) plants growing in the upper and middle reaches of the Pechora River. The paper provides data on concentration of metals in the tissue of Equisetum plants during the summer season of 2009–2010.

Removal of unsymmetric dimethylhydrazine from natural waters by way of catalytic aerobic oxidative breakdown

The paper describes an investigation of the possibility to use atmospheric oxygen as an oxidant for full catalytic oxidative breakdown of heptyl in the natural waters of altitudinal belts in the Altai / Sayan Mountains region (the region where the detachable portions of second stage launchers fall down). It is shown that the aerobic oxidative breakdown in the presence of copper-bearing and iron-bearing zeolite catalysts of ZSM-5 structure is an effective method ensuring full mineralizing of unsymmetric dimethylhydrazine, whose content in water may be up to total limit value multiplied by 1,000.

Toxic bloom of cyanobacteriae in Lake Kotokelskoye (Buryatia): The current status of the problem

Lake Kotokelskoye is a major site within the tourism and recreation zone of Buryatia. After the outbreak of the Haff’s disease in 2008, use of the lake for economic and recreational purposes was banned. We have started researches of phytoplankton and found out Anabaena and Microcystis cyanobacteriae, which are essentially producers of microcystine (a hepatotoxic substance). The paper contains the latest results of the monitoring of Lake Kotokelskoye (in 2010 and 2012) for presence of toxic cyanobacteriae and microcystines.

Optimization of the electrocoagulation technique for removal of heavy metal ions

An integrated laboratory investigation of the electrocoagulation technique for removal of heavy metal ions was carried out. It is shown that consumption of aluminum and electricity is minimal at рН = 7.6. It was found out that joint presence of nickel, copper, and zinc ions caused o a reduction in consumption parameters of the electrocoagulation technique. An evaluation of efficiency of fractional removal of the formed deposits by means of coagulation was performed. Use of the suggested methods allows a considerable optimization of aluminum-anode electrocoagulation technique as described in Construction Norms and Regulations SNiP 2.04.03–85.

A minor river as a complex aquatic and territorial formation

The paper describes river aquatic formations, such as the estuarine area of the river, the channel millpond, beaver ponds, and beaver dams. It provides a presentation of peculiarities of the hydrological and hydrobiological regimes of each aquatic formation. Also, trends for geoecological researches of the minor-river ecosystem are provided.

Development and validation of the molecular-and-genetic technique for diagnosing pathogenic microorganisms on external coatings of fishes

A set of diagnostic systems was developed. It includes a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for high-sensitivity detection of fishes’ bacterial ulcerous syndrome agents (Aeromonas and Flavobacterium microorganisms) and a PCR system for detection of pathogenic Saprolegnia fungi. The use of the system for detection of Aeromonas and Flavobacterium microorganisms was demonstrated in the form of real-time multiplex PCR on external coatings of fishes from the aquarium display. The set of diagnostic systems will allow enhancing the efficiency of periodic ichthyopathological monitoring of fishes kept in artificial conditions.

Ecological peculiarities of infusorians in the detritus food chain of the Lutoga River in Aniva Region of Sakhalin Area

The area of demise of Pacific salmons in the Lutoga River on Sakhalin features a rather peculiar community of aquatic organisms, which take part in the decay of dead organic substances. Infusorians, together with other organisms, play an important role in the transition of organic substances over trophic levels in aquatic ecosystems. The authors have determined the species composition of infusorians in samples from the Lutoga River and calculated the ciliate species diversity indexes and the saprobity of the river during the period of mass decay of Pacific salmon producers.

An integrated evaluation of water treatment coagulant quality using a geometrical model

The authors suggest a geometrical model for integrated evaluation of quality indexes of non-organic coagulants in order to support a quality decision. Using the suggested model, an integrated evaluation of quality of widely used non-organic water treatment coagulants was carried out.

Methods to determine total water, free water fraction, and attached water fraction in the organism and tissues of hydrobionts

It is shown that the use of the indirect methods for determination of different water fractions in organisms’ tissues brings discrepant results. The author suggests a direct method to determine total water, free water fraction, and attached water fraction in the organism and tissues of hydrobionts.

Chemical and photochemical breakdown of isoniazid and metronidazole

The authors have studied two antimicrobial and antiprotozoal drugs (metronidazole and isoniazid). Two methods were compared, one of them being photochemical destruction, and the other being oxidative breakdown using the Fenton’s reagent. Optimal conditions for chemical breakdown of medical drugs were determined.

Biochemical oxidation of waste vacuum oil in the liquid medium

Physical and chemical research of commercial vacuum oil VM-4 and waste vacuum oil VM-4 was carried out. Possibility of biochemical oxidation of waste vacuum oil using hydrocarbon-oxydizing microorganisms was demonstrated by means of a model system. The abundance of microorganisms in the prcocess of oxydation of hydrocarbons, which are ingredients of the waste oil, increases up to tens of billions of cells per a millimeter of the medium. The efficiency of oxydation of hydrocarbons, which are ingredients of the waste oil, is 24% to 46% (depending on initial concentration).

Simulation tests of large-diameter submerged vortex flowmeters

The paper describes a new type of vortex flowmeters for the monitoring of industrial wastes from pulp-and-paper mills. Design of the flowmeters is based on a conductometric receiver/converter of vortex fluctuations. The authors demonstrate promising measuring performance of such devices in comparison with existing ones. The paper also presents a possibility to manufacture such devices in the “submerged” version, which is fit for conducting flow measurements both in pipelines of various diameters and in open canals.

Water-course suspended particles and their deposition

The paper reviews problems of theoretical determination of suspended particles deposition rates in water and correlation of their quantity with other indexes of water quality in the Pregol River (Kaliningrad Area). A correlation analysis of suspended materials concentration versus certain water quality indexes was carried out. The authors give recommendations to improve parameters of grit catchers.

Hydrochemical parameters of salt lakes in Onon-Borzinsky interfluve (the Trans-Baikal region)

Results of expedition researches in the lakes of Onon-Borzinsky interfluve in 2012 thru 2012 showed that the salinity of lake waters had increased 1.7 to 3.7 times against the results of 1999. The high salinity of lake waters caused a reduction in oxygen content and water oxidation susceptibility.
